Bert Verboon, born in 1948, has been intensively involved in sculpting since 2001 and has been working on it almost full-time since August 2012, after retiring as a Research and Design teacher. Initially Bert was a traditional sculptor. Many sculptures were carved from various types of stone and usually completely polished to bring out the color and structure of the stone. He also made a series of geometric sculptures, which appear to have been put together in some way, but they are each carved entirely from a block of limestone.
He then worked with the combination of marble and stainless steel. This gave rise to the “Frames” series, in which a processed piece of marble was attached to a stainless steel frame.
Nowadays he often makes specific objects from industrial material, stainless steel, that have a minimalist appearance. But simplicity of space does not necessarily equate to simplicity of experience. His constructions enable complex encounters for viewers, as the reflections on the reflective material move as one walks past the works. These objects can also be manufactured in a larger format and are extremely resistant to weather influences.
A work doesn’t necessarily have to have a lot of things to look at, compare, think about, and analyze. The work as a whole, its quality as a whole, is the interesting thing. Form, image and color are usually singular.
