Toos van Poppel started as a fashion designer/stylist after studying at the Academy of Art and Design in Den Bosch.
Since 1995, Toos has been making paintings (mixed media) as well as composite objects and images that express history, based on the theme of beauty and decay. In 2020 she is working on a large work (photo collage) for public spaces.
The works she creates are often created intuitively and are like traces from a distant past, forged into a new whole, from her own source. There is an alternation in abstraction and figuration.
“The tension lies in the fact that two opposites are united in one work, such as strength and restrained energy, airy and heavy, light and dark, beauty and decay.”
The composite objects are made of weathered materials with fragments of industrial heritage, such as (cast) iron, bronze, copper, glass and wood.
The works are like daydream books that cannot always be ‘read’ in one go, but they must touch, intrigue or excite in one go. She regularly has a solo exhibition and her work is included in both private and corporate collections.
