History

Oudewater is a city and municipality in the Dutch province of Utrecht. The town obtained city rights in 1265, making it the oldest town in the Green Heart. The town has over 300 historic buildings, 97 municipal monuments and 127 national monuments, making it the highest monument density in the Netherlands. The town is internationally known for the ‘Heksenwaag’ (1545) and became rich through the rope industry, which also earned the inhabitants the nickname ‘Geelbuiken’. The municipality of Oudewater is located in the middle of the Green Heart. The area is characterized by ribbon development with a large role for cattle breeding. Most of the built-up area of the core lies like a wreath around the historic center north of the Hollandse IJssel. The part of the municipality south of this river lies in the Lopikerwaard.

Route

Oudewater is very centrally located between the four major cities. By car from Utrecht, Gouda, The Hague, Rotterdam or Amsterdam, you can get there in less than 45 minutes. If from the A12, take exit 13, this is the fastest and shortest route. Within 9 minutes from the highway you can reach the gallery!
