The northern landscape serves as an enduring source of inspiration for Angelique Mathijssen. Far removed from the everyday, surrounded by overwhelming nature, moments of wonder and recognition emerge—unexpected, fleeting encounters with animals, transient impressions, and instances where nature reveals itself, if only for a brief moment.
What touches her leaves a mark on her paintings. Her colorful, figurative, and often narrative work bears the clear imprint of personal experiences and associations. In her recent work, her focus has increasingly shifted toward the landscape as a vessel for memory and time.
The landscape is not a depiction of a specific, existing place, but rather a space where observation, memory, and experience intertwine. What is visible blends with what has vanished, shifted, or faded; images from “there” merge with those of the “here and now.” Serene landscapes and subtle traces of human presence invite you to look slowly. The meaning lies not only in what is revealed, but also in what is absent—in what lingers between the fragments.
Throughout her work, a personal note resonates: a reflection of what moves her, sparks her wonder, and stays with her.
