Greetje van den Heiligenberg (1981) has been exploring the possibilities of paint, pencil and chalk since her early childhood. Although she initially chose to study industrial design in Eindhoven and then studied sociology in Rotterdam, she eventually returned to her real passion: painting. Her current work shows her fascination with our most familiar image: the face. Greetje often uses a layered surface and prefers to work in monumental format. In terms of color use, she is guided by materials such as mortar, plaster, paper, charcoal, pencil and lime, to which she adds color based on paint pigments and pastel chalk. This leads to compelling portraits with a calm or mysterious appearance. At the same time, she is exploring the use of oil paint, where the colors are applied layer by layer until an intense color palette forms the desired image.
