Mari Mészàros (1949) was born in Tiszaszentimre, Hungary. From 1972 to 1977 she trained in glass at the Budapest Art Academy. Mészàros has lived and worked in the Netherlands since 1980. She has already won several important art prizes.
Mészàros has always been fascinated by the arrogant survival power of objects that carry time, history and human life. The imperfection of reality moves her more than its portrayal. The fragment that the ‘whole’ carries hidden within itself intrigues her more than the ‘whole’ itself.
In her work, Mészàros turns living people into objects, into future documents of their current lives. But these objects are different from the archaeological finds in peat, ice and preservatives. From the plaster casts that preserve personal physical dimensions, she creates sculptures that express eternal, universal human feelings.
