Solo exhibition Dindi van der Hoek

Solo exhibition by Dindi van der Hoek

During the months of October and November, Sille Gallery will present in a solo exhibition the artworks of Dindi van der Hoek. Her unique and striking photographic works, in which water plays a typical role are central to Dindi. The reflections of water are at the core of her visual language and style. As a viewer you become part of surrealistic images that create a certain confusion and seem to come from another world.

Sunday afternoon, Oct. 2, is the festive opening at 3 p.m. Dindi herself will be present, everyone is welcome. We look forward to welcoming you to the gallery soon! The exhibition will be on view from Sunday, October 2 through Saturday, November 26.

Some of her images are photographed underwater. In the early years, she worked underwater in a swimming pool. At the end of 2019, Dindi built a glass water basin in her studio and continued her experiments there. New images were created, through the addition of ink and milk, that seemingly effortlessly combine beauty and tranquility with a ragged darkness.

Dindi arranges each facet of the image, leading to a final result. The making of costumes, masks and props to the make-up of the model, everything is under Van der Hoek’s control. Only about the water she cannot determine anything, which teaches her precisely to let go of control. In her own words, “With my surrealistic images I take the viewer along an “inner walk”; it is about identity and about masks, masks that people use to cover their true identity consciously or unconsciously. The water in my work reflects mock reality and the viewer can be taken on a journey through their own illusionary world. Water is the most honest metaphor for life itself. Uncontrollable, transparent and incredibly flexible. Working with water has taught me so much in recent years and still does. I have been experimenting with water for over 20 years and the impact of water in my work still surprises me. It is unpredictable, uncontrollable and indispensable. The water reflections in my work have become a literal mirror and guide. It’s about balance, taking your place and freedom, and especially about letting go of control. Because water is now given more space, my work has become much more playful and clear in recent years.”

Dindi (1976) graduated from the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam in 1999. She is represented by Sille Gallery in Oudewater and Pulchri Studio in The Hague. Her work has been exhibited and published nationally and internationally in recent years.
