Roos van der Meijden is a realistic painter with classical characteristics in her work. But if you look longer, you will see that her work is also influenced by modern times and materials. With oil paint and acrylic paint she elaborates on the principles of ancient painting, which she combines with her own insights and colours.
“I paint what touches me, what stimulates my senses. With an urge to transfer that feeling and let other people feel the same atmosphere. Even an everyday scene can be overwhelmingly beautiful. I hope that this inspires people, encourages creativity or at least gives them a feeling of recognition.”
Although the subjects and situations vary in Roos van der Meijden’s paintings, contrasts between light and shadow and reflections are recurring themes. The paintings are rarely an exact copy of reality. Reality is the reason for painting, not the goal.
“Already during my training I became interested in the way the environment can reflect itself in water and how wave movements reflect light. Various topics have been discussed over the years, but reflections continue to inspire.”
