Samuel Dejong – Colored wall objects with insects

Samuel Dejong has an extensive background in medical science as a pathologist, surgeon and oncologist. He now, as a self-taught artist, focuses entirely on being an artist.

For a period he partly limited himself to abstraction and the primary colors red, yellow and blue. The monotone color makes the static yet moving form more powerful. Inspired by 20th century artists such as Klein, Newman and Kelly, Samuel Dejong works with abstract frames, shapes and figurative elements.

With his surgical precision he creates, among other things, detailed insects. These are very precisely executed in various materials and insert them into his abstract forms. He searches for a harmonious whole. Plays with symmetry, a-symmetry, color, planes and details. The insects look fragile, at the same time they stand strong and indestructible in their color plane.

Artist Samuel Dejong wants to encourage the awakening of consciousness through art.

Insects: including beetles, ants and butterflies were his first source of inspiration

In his sculpture series “Anatomia Blue Heritage,” Samuel Dejong aims to take the transformation of insects one step further. In doing so, he is inspired by the French artist Daniel Marot who brought the style of Louis XIV from France to the Netherlands.

Seeking inspiration in history, the self-taught Dejong draws inspiration from De Stijl, Nouveau Realism, biomorphism and surrealism. Dejong strives for harmony and balance in a world full of chaos to create something where peace prevails.
